The Death
of the 17th Earl of Oxford
Today is the anniversary of the death in 1604 of Edward de
Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford and Lord Great Chamberlain of
England. Having inherited one of the
great landed estates of England, he squandered it, ultimately relying upon a
pension from Queen Elizabeth.
Notwithstanding the movie Anonymous,
he almost certainly was not the author of Shakespeare’s works.
