The Passing of
John “Jack” T. Ballantine
It is with great sadness that I report the
passing of one of the great lions of the Kentucky Bar, Stoll Keenon Ogden’s own
Jack Ballantine. After graduation from Harvard Law School, Jack began his law
practice in 1958 in Louisville with what is now Stoll Keenon Ogden. He practiced more than 50 years, including
serving as General Counsel to SKO in the years preceding his retirement.
In both the literal and figurative sense, Jack was “a lawyer’s lawyer;” a true
master of our craft.
Jack was honored to be a member of the
exclusive American College of Trial Lawyers and recognized as a Senior
Statesman by Chambers USA. The Kentucky Bar Association named him
"Outstanding Lawyer" of 2003. He was AV Preeminent Peer Review Rated
by Martindale-Hubbell®, listed in Best Lawyers in America®, and honored
with the Judge Benjamin Shobe Award from the Louisville Bar Association for
Professionalism and Civility. He remained active with the Legal Aid Society
Campaign for Justice throughout his career. He also was a leader in
service to our community through extensive service on the boards of directors
of several hospitals, Metro United Way, the Kentucky Derby Festival, and many
other charitable organizations.
He will be sorely missed by those of us
who were fortunate enough to know and work with him.
