The Swearing in of the Papal Swiss Guard

The Swearing in of the Papal Swiss Guard

In most years, on May 6, the anniversary of the day 147 of their number fell while protecting Pope Clement VII during the 1527 Sack of Rome, new members of the Papal Swiss Guard are sworn into their new positions in the world’s smallest standing army.  But this year the ceremony was delayed consequent to the passing of Pope Francis. Today the newest members of the Papal Swiss Guard are being sworn into their new roles. They will be the first to swear to protect a pope from the U.S.
